Schedule of Classes

The System Safety Engineering courses build upon your knowledge as a safety professional or a supervisor/manager, to develop competence and sharpen skills in the techniques that support hazard discovery, the assessment and control of risk, and in reviewing work of this kind performed by others. You will receive guidance in the management of limited resources for the optimum control of risk.

In addition to the classes shown on the 2008 Schedule of Classes, APT also conducts on site system safety classes for clients who request them. These classes can be specially tailored to the needs of the students. Contact Sid Smith at (256) 327-3397 or ssmith@apt-research.com for information regarding on-site training courses.

Safety Program Development

In this course, participants are trained in system safety theory and are assisted in transitioning to its application in an actual system safety program. The course is divided into two phases.

  • Phase One includes review and definition of program objectives, and review/development of management documents including the System Safety Program Plan and the System Safety Management Plan. A plan for team activities, with easy-to-use program management software charts, will be produced.
  • Phase Two focuses on building the program team and establishing the most critical issues. In this phase, participants receive guidance in producing a preliminary hazards list, an initial version of an automated hazard tracking system, and a detailed plan for conducting the remainder of the program.

Presenters: Philip Owen, Tom Pfitzer, Saralyn Dwyer, and guest speakers from government and industry Duration: Two weeks of hands-on instruction at APT or client facilities. An interim period of one-two weeks between phases facilitates preparation of program documents, research into specific hazards, and scheduling of guest speakers on specific topics.

Software System Safety

A complete software system safety program should include at least 15 key steps tailored into a process supporting the program. This course reviews the process and dissects each step to discuss the techniques available, as well as the output desired, at each step. Case studies are used for each step to illustrate implementation.

In addition, significant emphasis is placed on integrating each step of the software safety process into system safety activities, as well as into the program as a whole.

Presenters: Philip Owen, Tom Pfitzer, Nina Donath Duration: 3 days for full class; 1 day for executive summary

Missile Flight Safety

In this course, the student examines typical missile flight hazards, the analytical techniques commonly used to evaluate them, and the responsibilities of the missile developer for assessing and controlling or mitigating the risks associated with flight testing.

Presenters: Bob Baker, Philip Owen, Tom Pfitzer Duration: 3 days for full class

Ground Safety

This course constitutes an overview of applicable requirements in explosives and RF hazards. It covers subjects such as: explosives quantity-distance requirements and analysis; explosives transportation requirements and their application; controlling microwave and RF emissions; and conducting RF hazard surveys.

Presenters: Philip Owen, Tom Pfitzer. and guest speakers from government and industry

Duration: 3 days for full class
