Homemade Explosives (HME) Course

This course covers HME characteristics, indicators, chemical precursors, commonly used processing equipment, clandestine manufacturing sites, and their associated hazards. APT provides all necessary training materials to include HME-related IED training devices, mock lab facilities, and simulators. We also provide practical exercises at the end of each training block.

Description: This course provides information related to manufacturing HME and components, including relevant types found by the FBI, ATF, Homeland Security, and the Theaters of Operation.

Course Time: This course requires four days to complete, with approximately 40% classroom learning and 60% scenario-driven practical exercises.

Learning Objectives:

  • Information on commonly used types of HME, precursors, Nitrates, Chlorates, Peroxides and Permanganates, common fuels (solid and liquid), common oxidizers (solid and liquid), associated hazards, and improvised detonators.
  • Provide current, relevant sampling and hazard mitigation procedures on the different types of HME.
  • Provide instructions on general HME facility set up, storage requirements, and identifiers of illicit HME labs.
