Payload developers are experts in their field, but often less familiar with the safety requirements and review processes needed to launch experiments to orbit. Payload Developer Safety Training is designed to bridge that gap, equipping developers with the knowledge and skills to design safer payloads, write effective hazard reports, and prepare for successful safety reviews and on-orbit operations.
This three-day course combines elements of APT’s System Safety Engineering (SSE) training with practical, payload-specific guidance: the first two days cover core content from APT’s SSE Training Course, while the third day focuses exclusively on Payload Developer Safety. Participants will learn how to navigate the safety review process, understand documentation requirements, and develop clear hazard controls that meet program expectations.
Course Objectives:
- Safely Designing a Payload & Writing Hazard Reports
- Understand design and safety requirements for payloads
- Learn the purpose and structure of hazard reports and controls
- Practice writing hazard reports and controls
- Review documentation that accompanies hazard submissions
- Payload Safety Process – A Primer for Developers
- Explore Safety Review Panel structure and process
- Review required documentation
- Learn planning steps and real-time operations preparation
Who Should Attend: Payload developers, researchers, engineers, and project managers preparing payloads for spaceflight who want a stronger understanding of the safety process and expectations.
